Sancreed Village Hall

Sancreed Village Hall is situated in the village of Sancreed Churchtown in the parish of Sancreed. The wooden hall was constructed in the 1930’s and the leaning wall on the East side was caused by a Westerly gale that blew through not long after the hall was built. It was the base for the Home Guard during WW11. The watch was stationed on Sancreed Beacon with views of the adjoining three parishes, Madron, St Buryan and St Just and beyond to Mounts Bay and The Lizard.

The hall become The Mens Institute with a full sized snooker table that was very popular with competitions being held locally.

Barn dances were held regularly and younger people walked from all around the area to enjoy dancing and meeting other folk. An elderly St Just gentleman recently told the story that years ago he met a rather attractive girl at one of the barn dances and he decided he would offer to walk her home. She accepted but when she told him she lived in Drift he thought about it for a bit and then decided he wouldn’t, it was too far in the wrong direction. ‘Things might have been very different if I had walked that girl home’ he said with a wry smile.

In the mid 1980’s fire prevention regulations required that the wooden building be clad in non-flammable material and cement was used to encase the hall with a mock stone effect.

In the early 1990’s volunteers installed toilets and a kitchen at the hall. This work was needed to bring the hall into line with new legislation. The kitchen was refurbished by volunteers in 2011. The toilets were updated in 2022 and an external pathway was upgraded to improve wheelchair access.

The hall retains a charm from times past, an uncomplicated building that lends itself to a myriad of events, weddings, fetes, birthday parties, quiz nights, film evenings, theatre and singing. It has excellent acoustics, a very friendly atmosphere and is available to hire, with garden, at very reasonable rates.
